    Spider Soul

I killed a spider the other day, mercilessly squishing it between a hardcover book and my bed sheets; and changing them immediately afterwards for fear of attracting more eight legged arachnids.

Then, that night, lying in my newly changed sheets a thought crossed my mind: We as a nation find slaughtering animals and murdering others atrocious, but the act of squishing a specimen the size of a fingernail is A-okay.  In fact, if you go to the local Home Depot, you’ll find an entire department dedicated on demolishing any of these creatures in the vicinity: Ants, spiders, cockroaches, worms, crickets, lady bugs, etc.  Why do we feel it’s necessary and alright to kill insects.  To most, it’s second nature.

Is it the fact that there are just so many?  Some ant colonies have more ants in them than there are humans in the world!

Is it the fact that we can’t hear them scream?  I think a crunch from a cockroach is enough to make me cringe.

Well, contrary to popular belief, they are living creatures as well; part of the animal kingdom.  If you’ve ever been cruel enough to grab a moth, fly or any other winged bug and ripped it’s wing off, you will see it squirm.

It will squirm!!  They feel pain too.

Yes, the insect world is different, maybe they don’t build relationships with other bugs or have life partners, but they feel pain.  And ripping off those wings probably hurts like hell.

So, everyday that a spider is alive, it is still the same spider.  Since the time it was born till the time it dies, it’s the same bug.  It thinks the same and it has a life to be lived.  Sure it has no morals, but it’s still living and it still feels that hardcover slamming down on its feeble body.

Next time you kill a bug, think, … I know I will.
